Toronto, Canada's industrial and business capital is one of the largest cities that attract so many tourists every year from all over the world. This safe, clean and modern metropolis is vibrant with lots of activities and is one of the greatest ethnic melting pots that seduce one and all.

History

Toronto has a rich cultural history that started a long way before Europeans first arrived in this place. The Iroquois tribes were living in those regions until they were displaced by the Huron tribes. The word ‘Toronto’ was derived from Iroquois word ‘tkaronto’ meaning places where trees strand in the water.

During the year 1793, the town of was established and after the Battle of War in 1813, American forces captured the city. Again on March the 6th, 1834 York was incorporated again with its original name as the YorkCity of Toronto. It became twice the capital of United Province of Canada for a very brief period. In 1904, the Great Toronto fire destroyed major part of the city but it was rebuilt from rubbles very quickly.

The city became a destination for immigrants from Eastern Europe and other places. It started to grow rapidly in the 19th century and in 1954 the city of Toronto was federated to Metropolitan Toronto. In 1980s, the city surpassed Montreal to be the most populous city in Canada and eventually transformed to become one of the major cities in the world.

 

Geography

The eastern side of Toronto is covered by Rouge River, Steele’s Avenue lies to its north, the south is surrounded by Lake Ontario and in the west lays the Highway 427 and Etobicoke Creek.

Humber River and Don River and their tributaries have intersected Toronto city. The dense forested ravines are the ideal recreational spots with innumerable rivers and creeks.

Built on three man-made islands over the Ontario Lake, it boasts of restaurants, an outdoor amphitheatre, children's village, and even mini golf. The many attractions of the city are so alluring, that each unfolds slowly and you simply keep relishing the slow-building pleasure.

Amongst many other attractions include the St. Lawrence Market, Little Glenn, St. Michael's Cathedral, Hockey Hall of Fame and the Casa Loma Castle.

Toronto is again a premier shopping destination and its Eaton Center is shoppers' paradise with its multi-leveled galleria housing over 320 shops and restaurants. Again, it is the Bloor-Yorkville area, where city's most premier retail shops are located catering to all tastes and budget. Apart from these there is also the Dundas Square, the city's newest and popular public square located close to the Toronto Eaton Center, one of the busiest shopping malls in the city and the shopping lovers enjoy till their wallets are emptied.

 

Activities at leisure

Toronto is a hip-hop and a very much happening city and one can indulge in a wide range of activities when here. Take great pleasure by camping in The Glen Rouge Campground that spreads across 12,000 acres of lush green meadows and forests in the Canada's biggest urban park, the Rouge Park. The Campground of the Glen Rouge is equipped with as many as 125 sites both serviced and unserviced. One can avail such serviced sites with average pricing of $30 per site. Golf has always been a great game of relaxation and recreation.

Toronto pampers the locals as well its tourists with Dentonia, Don Valley, Humber Valley, Scarlett and Tam O'shanter courses. Teeing at leisure is a pleasure at Toronto. If someone is adventurous with ice-skating you will not be disappointed at Toronto. The city offers innumerable skiing options at East York District, Etobicoke York and in North York Districts.

Apart from teeing and skiing, one can tone up their muscles with a 30-minute swimming at one of the forty outdoor swimming pools at Toronto. Some of the popular ones include the Alex Duff, Alexandra Park, Donald D, Summerville and Greenwood Park. One can enjoy a game of tennis too anytime between the months of April and December.

Nightlife at Toronto

The eclectic nightlife offered by the city is the ultimate icing if visit to Toronto can be considered a cake. Either you get rocking with a glass of Pinot Grigio wine at the Italian resto-bar on College Street or tap your feet and dance to the tune of live jazz. One can also relax in the lounge bar of the Danforth with a glass of Ouzo. The city gets set for a jazzy party as soon as the clock struck 11 at night and in no time the dance clubs get jampacked and it is no exaggeration that you really need to jostle your way into any of these places. However, for added glamor and expensive vodka cocktails, head straight towards the King West. One can also spend a great evening at Richard Bradshaw Amphitheater, where free concerts are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon. At a stone's throw distance from Dundas Square is the Canon theater where musical extravaganza is at its best.

 

Some useful tips

If you are very pleased with the service and the hospitality either in the hotel rooms, by cab drivers or bartenders, you can tip the wait staff up to 15% on the bill amount, C$1 per drink to the bartender or 10% of the fare amount to the cab drivers. A short taxi ride will not cost you more than $8. One can enjoy harbor cruise at maximum C$25, while you can buy a movie ticket with C$11 and can munch a club sandwich at C$7.

So, why wait, simply pack your bags and land at the airport, take a shuttle to your hotel and it will not cost you more than C$18. Toronto to be explored at hurricane speed but with lot of time.
